A chronological list of all the games that Mario has appeared in, either in a starring role, spin off or just a cameo appearance from where things began in 1981 to the present day.

Glossary

  • Cameo – is not a Mario based title, however there is reference to him somewhere along the story.
  • Spin off - Not a main-stream Mario adventure game, but a spin off in which Mario may be a playable character.
  • Main role - Mario is the starring character in one of his regular adventure games.

 

1980's - spanning the arcades, Famicon, NES and seeing Mario go handheld on the Game Boy

Originally back in 1980’s Mario was not a plumber but a carpenter, whom referred to as the “Jump man” and not Mario as we recognized him.

1981

The Famicom enjoyed great success in Japan.

 

1990's - The Gameboy gains momentum, Mario arrives on the PC, Super Famicom, SNES & other consoles

A new decade and Mario has more title roles given compared to the previous era other than starring as Cameo’s in other games. This also marks the introduction of “Edutainment” titles like typing skills, history, geography and etc.

A new generation has arrived and a new mode of gameplay had been given birth to. This era witness the end of the successful Super Nintendo (SNES) as the Nintendo “ultra” 64 followed by the gamecube and eventually the Wii made it’s mark on video game history.
